The amount of plastic waste in our oceans and waterways is mind-boggling: 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. Plastic bottles alone make up 1.5 million tons of plastic waste annually.

Plastics and other litter ultimately end up in the world’s gyres, or circulating ocean currents, and can turn into dense vortexes of trash. The most famous marine trash heap, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is twice the size of Texas.

Section 1: Eco-Friendly Products for the Home - Clothing

Why is eco-friendly clothing important? The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world. The first being oil. Let that sink in for a moment. It can take 2,700 liters of water to produce the cotton needed to make a single t-shirt; a pair of jeans uses 1,800 gallons of water; there are 1,600 chemicals being used in the dyeing processes. And guess what, only 1% of those chemicals have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency; a T-shirt can travel up to 3,500 km before it lands on a consumer’s back.

We can sit here and blame the industry for all of the wasteful things they do, but honestly, the industry is not the only ones to blame. Consumers are consuming  400% more clothing today versus 20 years ago. Statistics says the average garment is worn only 7 times before it gets thrown away! Wha-WHAT?! 7 times! I wear my shirt 7 times before I wash it! Just kidding, that would be gross, but I think you get the point.

Look,

I get it, those are staggering statistics. Maybe I came in a little too strong for the first section of this list. But before you drop everything, consign all your clothes, and join a nudist colony; check out these great companies that are making a real effort to be more sustainable and help the environment. So without further ado, here is your first section of Eco-Friendly Products for the Home.

Section 2: Sustainable Products for the Home - Eco-Friendly Shoes, Boots and Sandals

In this next section of Eco-Friendly Products for the Home, we ask ourselves what makes a shoe eco-friendly? The term eco-friendly has collected a lot of attributes over the years. It used to be, when you said you had an eco-friendly product, it was made with sustainable or recycled materials. Over time, eco-friendly started taking on new meanings. It went beyond just recycled materials.

Companies started paying more attention to how the product was manufactured. Asking questions like "Are we making this in an environmentally responsible way?" or "How much water do we use?" and "Are we conserving resources during production?"

Questions like these brought us very far. Today, saying you have eco-friendly product can mean it uses recycled materials to make it or the packaging, it is made in a facility that is conscious of waste management, it is fair trade and ethical to their workers, and is vegan.

Below you will find a list of Eco-Friendly Shoe Companies that follow these practices to bring you a comfortable, stylish, and ethically sourced shoe!

Kamik

Kamik uses recycled materials to create their boot liners. Their factories follow lean manufacturing programs that reduce physical waste, as well as 100% of material waste and water, is reused and recycled. With 73% of products made in North America, Kamik is keeping things local.

The Peoples Movement

The People’s Movements pairs eco-conscious materials with up-cycled plastic bags cleaned from Bali.  They also support organizations like 5 Gyres who have systematically reduced plastics through oceanic research, collaboration, and action.

Timberland

Since 2001 9.6 million trees have been planted by Timberland. Along with planting millions of trees Timberland employees have also put in 1,00,000 hours of community service to help clean up our planet. Every pair of Timberland boots are made from recycled plastic bottles which makes me wonder if they are getting the bottles directly from their community service...that is one way to cut out the middle man.

El Naturalista

El Naturalista is constantly conducting research to create new and innovative methods to make more sustainable products.

Keen

Keen has donated more than $15 MILLION to non-profit organizations around the world. They have a Gandhi like approach to their business model. Thanks to the help of a partnership through Trees for the Future, the reforestation program has expanded to three continents in five years. Etnies has gone the distance! Section 3: Environmentally Friendly Products for the Home - Eco-Friendly Kitchen Products

Ah, the kitchen, where the magic happens. Here is where you will be preparing all of that yummy delicious organic food you bought. But you are going to want to use various products and greenware to handle this precious food.

Unfortunately, all those plastic containers that we’ve been storing our food and drinking water out of, including BPA and phthalates. These two little rascals are not something you want in your body.

BPA is found in many plastic water bottles, as well as in canned food. It’s a synthetic hormone that has been linked to breast cancer. Phthalates are no better and can throw your hormones and thyroid out of whack.

Then, of course, there's the environmental impact of plastic. One water bottle takes hundreds of years to break down and is usually stuck in a landfill or banished to the ocean to dispose of. Did you know there are 5 massive garbage piles floating in the ocean? One of which is called The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Now think of the animals that eat this plastic, that we then, in turn, eat ourselves! A vicious cycle I know. It is extremely important that we stop mindlessly littering and start using more biodegradable, eco-friendly products for the home. Luckily there are some great companies out there supplying us with these eco-friendly kitchen products today!

Section 7: Eco Friendly Products for the Home - Eco-Friendly Food Companies

Shopping for healthy, responsibly produced food can be a bit of a challenge. With the ever-growing list of chemicals and preservatives going into food, it is kind of hard to keep track of which ones you should be putting in your body and which ones you should not. A general rule of thumb we use in my household is, the fewer ingredients the better the product. Also, if you can't pronounce the ingredient, don't ingest it! That's not to say there are not natural preservatives out there that are perfectly fine for you. However, there are some eco-friendly food companies that have made their business out of offering reliably healthy products that prioritize the health of their customers, their producers, and the environment.

Section 8: Eco-Friendly Products for the Home - Eco Friendly Jewelry

Although it may be hard to believe, it is very important to that switch to buying eco-friendly jewelry. So what is eco-friendly jewelry and what makes jewelry eco-friendly? We should start by defining what makes jewelry making harmful to the environment. The main problem with jewelry is the way we mine it.  Miners strip the surface soil and use harmful chemicals to extract the rocks. This can cause soil erosion, the formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity and will contaminate the soil in both ground and surface water. This happens even when fairly stringent environmental regulations are followed, as they are in the United States, where metals mining is the most toxic polluter, responsible for 96 percent of arsenic emissions and 76 percent of lead emissions. In other countries, the regulations are not nearly as strict and are less likely enforced. In the developing countries, lead poisoning of epidemic proportions (Nigeria) or heavy metal soil contamination (Mexico) is just some of the likely (and, unfortunately, not entirely rare) consequences.
